In this article, we'll show you how to connect your organization's Tenovi account to Heads Up so you can automatically sync remote patient monitoring data, starting with the Tenovi PillBox for medication adherence tracking.

This integration uses Patient IDs to match users between Tenovi and Heads Up, so make sure that's set up correctly (more on that below πŸ‘‡).

The How-to

Part 1: Get Your Tenovi API Key and Organization Slug

Follow these steps to obtain your Tenovi credentials:

  1. Log in to the Tenovi Web App at https://app.tenovi.com/

  2. Select your organization from the dashboard

  3. Navigate to HWI Settings from the main menu

  4. Click "Add New API Key" to create a new API connection

  5. Name your API Key (e.g., "Heads Up Integration")

  6. Click "Add API Key" to generate the key

  7. ⚠️ IMPORTANT: Copy and save the API Key that's displayed - you won't be able to see it again!

  8. Click "Done" when you've saved the key

  9. Copy your Organization Slug from the URL in your browser:

    • Look for the part after /org/ in your URL

    • Example: If your URL is app.tenovi.com/org/myclinic/, your slug is myclinic

Part 2: Connect Tenovi to Heads Up

Now let's link your Tenovi account in Heads Up:

  1. Go to your Organization Settings > Integrations in Heads Up

  2. Find Tenovi in the list and click Link

  3. Enter your credentials:

    • Enter your Organization Slug from Part 1

    • Paste your API Key from Part 1

  4. Click Save

  5. Look for the green checkmark βœ… to confirm the connection was successful

Part 3: Match Clients Between Systems

Heads Up and Tenovi match users using Patient IDs. You have two options for mapping patients:

Option A: API Mapping (Recommended for Bulk Setup)

Use the Heads Up User Management APIs to send the Tenovi Patient ID as the ExternalId. This is ideal for practices with many patients to connect. Contact Support for more information on these APIs.

Option B: Manual Mapping (Individual Patients)

Perfect for testing or connecting individual patients:

In Tenovi:

  1. Navigate to the Devices section

  2. Find the device you want to map

  3. Copy the Patient ID for that device

In Heads Up:

  1. Go to the client's Profile

  2. Navigate to Integrations > Tenovi

  3. Click the Tenovi icon

  4. Paste the Patient ID

  5. Click Save and look for the success message

Connect the Device:

  1. After saving the Patient ID, hover over the Tenovi tile and click "Devices"

  2. Return to Tenovi and copy the HWI ID for the device

  3. Go back to Heads Up and paste the HWI ID

  4. Click Save

  5. The device ID will display below the input box

  6. Repeat for any additional devices for this patient

Part 4: Validate Data is Flowing (Optional)

To confirm everything is working:

  1. Click "Refresh User Data" at the top of the client's Integrations section

  2. Wait for the refresh to complete

  3. Navigate to the client's Reports page

  4. Search for "Tenovi"

  5. Select "All Data" date range

  6. Verify that medication adherence data is present

What Happens Next?

Once a patient opens their PillBox compartment, the data will automatically appear in the client's Heads Up dashboard under "Medication Device Data" with:

  • The specific compartment opened (e.g., "Monday AM")

  • The timestamp of when it was opened

  • Historical data if the device was offline and came back online

How the Syncing Works

Real-time Updates:

  • PillBox open events are sent immediately via webhook when a compartment is opened

  • Data appears in Heads Up within minutes

Offline Device Handling:

  • If the PillBox is out of gateway range, events are stored locally

  • When the gateway connection is restored, all stored events sync automatically

FAQs

What Tenovi devices are currently supported?

Currently, we support the Tenovi PillBox for medication adherence tracking. Support for additional devices including blood pressure monitors, glucometers, scales, and pulse oximeters is coming soon.

How quickly does data sync?

Data syncs in real-time via webhooks. When a patient opens a PillBox compartment, the event appears in Heads Up within seconds.

What if my PillBox is out of range?

No worries! The PillBox stores events locally when out of gateway range. Once it reconnects, all stored events will sync automatically to Heads Up.

Can I connect multiple devices per patient?

Yes! You can connect multiple Tenovi devices to a single patient. Just repeat the device mapping process for each device.

Does this integration support bulk patient import?

Yes, you can use our User Management APIs to bulk map patients between Tenovi and Heads Up using the ExternalId field.

What data is tracked from the PillBox? We track:

  • Which compartment was opened (day and AM/PM)

  • The exact time it was opened

Is this integration available for all Heads Up organizations?

The Tenovi integration requires activation by your Account Executive or Customer Success representative. Contact them to enable it for your organization.
